MIP 2 - Session 4

The fourth session of the UEFA MIP took place in Barcelona from 28 May to 1 June 2018.
 
Directed by Francesc Solanellas, professor of sport management at the National Institute of Physical Education of Catalonia (INEFC), this session focused on the manager in action. The objectives of this week were the following:
 
  • Take a practical look at how different clubs are structured
  • Discuss issues surrounding leadership and motivation at sports organisations (such as clubs, national associations and leagues)
  • Explain the key principles of negotiation and practise them in real-life situations using case studies
 
The week started at Camp Nou with a presentation by Francesc Solanellas and Thomas Junod, senior education and research manager at UEFA, who illustrated the different ways of structuring a sports organisation.
This introduction was followed by an overview on the FC Barcelona Foundation’s activities and the group had the opportunity to learn about FC Barcelona’s strategic plan.

On Tuesday, the participants were hosted at Euroleague where they learned how to read a budget, a profit and loss statement and a balance sheet thanks to Antonio Dávila, professor at IESE Business School and Francesc Solanellas, professor of sport management at INEFC.
 
During the afternoon, Carlos García Pont, member of the board at RCD Espanyol explained the decision-making process at a professional club. His presentation was followed by a group exercise during which participants had to work on an organisational structure of a professional club/national association.

The Wednesday session was held at Barcelona World Race where Santiago Álvarez de Mon, professor at IESE Business School, set out the main principles of governing the selection of a team.
Later in the morning, Josep Lluis Marcó Castellnou, member of the board at Amrop Seeliger y Conde explained to the group how to prepare for a professional interview.

The last presentation of the day was delivered by Knut Frostad, member of the board, at Volvo Ocean Race, who explained to the participants how to improve group dynamics.
 
The day ended with a visit of the Barcelona Harbour on a catamaran.

The fourth day of the session took place at INEFC. The morning was organised around negotiation case-studies. First, Francesc Solanellas explained the key principles of negotiation for professional teams then participants had the opportunity to improve their negotiation skills through various exercises.
 
The group rounded up the day with the presentation of the progress of their MIP managerial reports that they will have to defend in May 2019. Each participant made a ten-minutes presentation and then debriefed with their mentors.
 
On Thursday evening the group played futsal and went to Xalet de Monjuïc where the social event took place.
 
For the final day participants went back to Euroleague. The morning was dedicated to the role of the sporting director with the participation of Roberto Samaden, youth academy director at Inter Milan, Axel Schuster, sporting director at FC Schalke 04 and Roel Vaeyens, sporting coordinator, Club Brugge.

The next UEFA MIP session will take place in London from 8-12 October 2018 and will be dedicated to marketing and communication.
